Ender's Game

We just finished reading _Ender's Game_ as a family. Some of my children want to go right on to the sequel; one wants to wait a while.

My 12yods is very upset at the fact that Ender didn't know what was really going on until after he was done doing it. And then to discover that the entire invasion was unnecessary!! Of course, without any way to prove that it was unnecessary and even if he had known in time, there was no way to convince everyone who would have needed convincing.

Re: Ender's Game

If your 12 yo is upset about that part of the book, reading "Speaker for the Dead" may help him resolve that. Have you read the entire series? I have read it through once and several of the books more than once. You may want to pre-read it as it has some pretty graphic things that you may not feel are appropriate for your children.

My mom loved "Ender's Game" and recommended I try the Bean series - which follows the character of Bean. She liked it a lot, but has not read the rest of the "Ender's Game" series.

Re: Ender's Game

We switched to reading _Mossflower_ from the Redwall series. My 12yods took _Ender's Game_ very seriously, but let it go afterwards. My 15yods, on the other hand, considers _Ender's Game_ a classic in his life; he says it explains very well how miscommunication leads to war, and how defense is necessary to survive ("if you're not willing to die to defend yourself, you're always at the mercy of those who are"). We had several discussions about the differences between Peter, Valentine, and Ender. I concluded, for myself, that all three fill important roles and are, therefore, necessary types. Leaders don't all stand out in front.
