Killer Angels (civil war)
My husband and I read Killer Angels by Michael Shaara and others by Jeff Shaara together. At different times we would each read parts of them aloud to our kids plus they would hear us discussing them. Even though my kids are not ready to read them now at 12 and 8 the books stay on the shelf for later and my son asks to be read from them from time to time.

living history books for American History
I've used all the books from Sonlight curriculum with my kids (11, 9, 6 and 3) for the last couple years doing American History. If you check out their website you can look at their booklists for Core 3 and Core 4 (Intro to American History for Love of Learning age kids). I'd recommend 95% of what we've read from them. They'll sell you an entire curriculum including Instructor's Guide and all kinds of check the box stuff if you want it :) But, on their website you can see all the history, readers and read-aloud books they use for American history. That list should give you a good place to go from to start hitting the library.
I'm assuming you're familiar with American Girl stories and the mysteries they've started, my boys like the mysteries.
